Being the first in the family to pursue college presents unique challenges. As a parent or family member of a first-gen student, your encouragement and assistance are key to helping your student navigate this exciting journey.

Ways to Support Your Student

  1. Explore postsecondary pathway options, and help your student find the path that best fits their interests and strengths.
  2. Understand college life and the differences between high school and college lifestyles. Support your student in developing essential skills like time management and study habits.
  3. Encourage your student to use resources available to them, like college advisors and counselors.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the college application process and requirements including necessary documents and information your student may need.
  5. Learn about financial aid options such as college savings plans, completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and parent PLUS loans. Understanding these options will help you support your student in achieving their academic goals without financial stress.
  6. Celebrate your student’s achievements. First-gen students should take pride in their accomplishments. As their support system, you can reinforce this pride by celebrating their milestones, both big and small.

Your role as a supportive family member is invaluable in helping your first-gen student thrive in college. By understanding their challenges, celebrating their successes and providing practical support, you contribute significantly to their educational journey.
