Virginia has a wide variety of public, private (non-profit) and proprietary four-year colleges and universities. Four-year colleges offer programs that lead to a bachelor's degree. They include universities and liberal arts colleges. Both types of colleges offer valuable experiences and prepare students for various careers and further study. When choosing, consider factors such as college size, academic offerings, campus culture and activities that match your interests and goals.

Universities

Universities are large educational institutions that typically offer a broader range of academic programs and degrees than colleges. Universities offer undergraduate degrees, such as bachelor’s degrees, as well as graduate degrees, such as master’s and doctoral degrees. Within a university, there are often individual colleges or schools that specialize in specific fields, such as liberal arts, engineering, health sciences, business and more. These smaller colleges and schools operate under the umbrella of the larger university, providing students with diverse academic opportunities and resources.

Liberal Arts Colleges

Liberal arts colleges offer a well-rounded education that can prepare you for a wide range of careers and further studies at the graduate level. These colleges focus on providing a comprehensive foundation in the liberal arts, including such subjects as literature, history, languages, mathematics and life sciences. They offer four-year programs leading to a bachelor’s degree. The diverse curriculum and emphasis on critical thinking and communication skills make liberal arts colleges an excellent choice for students seeking career preparation and a lifelong appreciation for learning!
