Virginia is committed to supporting active-duty military members, veterans and their families in achieving their educational goals. The state offers a variety of benefits that supplement and expand on federal programs to make attending college in Virginia more affordable and accessible.

In-State Tuition Benefits

Active-Duty Military and Families

Active-duty service members and their families stationed in Virginia or surrounding states can receive in-state tuition and state financial aid as soon as they establish Virginia residency (domicile). This bypasses the usual one year wait to quality for in-state tuition. Proof demonstrating your intent to remain in Virginia is required. Once established, your in-state status remains even if you receive orders to a new location.

Veterans and Families

Veterans can qualify for in-state tuition and benefits by establishing residency in Virginia. Once a veteran is a resident, their spouse and dependent children are also eligible for in-state tuition and state financial aid.

Financial Assistance

GI Bill

Virginia colleges and universities largely accept the GI Bill, which covers in-state tuition and fees. Several Virginia schools also participate in the GI Bill Yellow Ribbon Program, offering additional resources to students using the GI Bill. Find a list of participating Virginia schools on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website

Virginia Military Survivors and Dependent Education Program (VMSDEP)

For families of Virginia veterans who were killed in action, missing in action, taken prisoner of war, or became at least 90% disabled due to service, VMSDEP offers significant support. Eligible dependents receive waived tuition and fees at public Virginia colleges and universities and may also receive a stipend for educational expenses. Learn more details from the Virginia Department of Veterans Services.
