The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law designed to protect the privacy of student education records. Under FERPA, parents have the right to access and review their children’s education records until the student turns 18 or enters college. At that point, FERPA rights transfer to the student. FERPA restricts colleges and universities from disclosing certain student records and information, even to parents and families, without the student’s explicit consent.
