Students whose immediate family members did not earn four-year degrees — also called “ first-generation students” — often face unique challenges in college. As a first-generation student, it’s important that you begin your postsecondary education planning and preparation early, to give you the smoothest transition. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your postsecondary journey:

  • Explore resources that will help you understand how your interests and talents can connect to a career and higher education options.
  • Explore your postsecondary pathway options to determine what the best fit is for you.
  • Talk to counselors, college advisors and teachers about what high school coursework will prepare you for postsecondary education.
  • Ask for help when you begin the college application and financial aid process. Work with your college advisor or school counselor so they can assist you if needed.
  • Update your Academic and Career Plan regularly. Having a clear vision of what you want to achieve can drive you forward.
  • If possible, visit college campuses to get a feel for the environment and facilities. College tours can help you make informed decisions about where to apply.
