Grants and scholarships, also known as “gift aid,” are free money that you don’t have to pay back! Applying for as many of these as possible can help you reduce the amount you have to pay out of pocket.

What’s the Deal?

  • Cover Costs: From tuition to books, and even your dorm room decor — these gifts can help pay for many expenses.
  • Different Sizes: From small to big amounts, every bit counts!

Based on What?

  • Financial Need: Need is determined by such factors as your family’s earnings or savings.
  • Merit: Ace your exams? A pro at piano? A soccer superstar? Your skills and achievements can earn you rewards!
  • Location: Place based scholarships, also known as promise scholarships, are awarded to students who live or go to school in certain locations. They are often run by local organizations. Search your zip code in our College Access Provider Directory to find a place-based scholarship near you!

Where to Look:

  • Your College’s Financial Aid Office: They’re your go-to for information about college-specific grants and scholarships and other financial help.
  • Private Organizations: Companies, clubs, faith-based organizations and nonprofit groups often give out scholarships for all kinds of reasons — from your interests to your background.
  • Your Inner Circle: Ask your parents, friends, school counselor and teachers. They might know about local scholarships that you don’t.

Takeaway:

Everyone deserves a fair shot at these resources, regardless of their background or financial situation. So, start applying! A few hours filling out forms can turn into thousands of dollars saved.
